Economist Warns of the Risk of Indonesia's Entry into the Peace Council
JAKARTA - A number of economists have warned of the risk of Indonesia joining the Gaza Peace Council (Board of Peace) the idea of US President Donald Trump, especially in terms of geopolitics and the accompanying economic impact later.
Celios Executive Director Bhima Yudhistira Adhinegara considers it important for Indonesia to maintain good relations with countries that are not members of the council.
"There is a risk of Indonesia's entry into the Board of Peace causing friction, especially in countries that are counter, and also shows that Indonesia is pro-US. It must be ensured that Indonesia continues to maintain good relations with countries that are counter to the Board of Peace. There is more risk of polarization for Indonesia," said Bhima as reported by ANTARA, Friday, January 23.
Similarly, the Executive Director of the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Indonesia Mohammad Faisal said that Indonesia's diplomatic skills are very necessary to maintain good relations with non-member countries, and minimize the risk of "leaning towards the US".
"I still see that by accepting this Board of Peace, at least it will be brought to its goal, namely for peace in Gaza. However, there is a concern (Indonesia looks) will be more inclined or steered by the American or Trump side. Well, this depends on the skill of the diplomatic side," said Faisal.
"So, how is the expertise of diplomacy to minimize pressure or influence from America which is quite repressive against other countries, even including its own allies, allies or allies," he added.
However, at the same time, Indonesia also joined the BRICS which is expected to be a counterweight to this attitude.
In addition, it is also hoped that by joining the Peace Council, Indonesia can bring the essence of peace itself, namely it must be based on justice, respect for international law, provide protection for human rights and the fulfillment of the Palestinian people's right to independence.
Previously, President Prabowo signed the Charter of the Peace Council on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) agenda in Davos, Switzerland, Thursday (22/1).
Prabowo said the Gaza Peace Council was a historic opportunity to achieve peace in Gaza, and Indonesia had a great commitment to play a role in realizing this for the good of the Palestinian people.
