Cipinang Prison Inmate Found Dead by Hanging Himself

JAKARTA - A prisoner or inmate of the Cipinang Class I Prison (Rutan), Cipinang Besar Utara, Jatinegara District, East Jakarta, allegedly committed suicide on Thursday, January 21, 2026.

Head of Public Relations of the Metro Jaya Police, Kombes Budi Hermanto confirmed the incident. He said that the victim was a male inmate with the initials SAK (38).

"It's true, a resident with the initials SAK (38) was found dead, allegedly committing suicide by hanging himself," Budi said in his statement, Friday, January 22, 2026.

According to Budi, the incident occurred at the Cipinang Class I Detention Center, specifically in the RA Koesnoen Building, on the third floor stairs area.

The victim was found with a binding on his neck, while at the location, evidence in the form of a cloth that was twisted like a rope was found.

He explained that the incident began when the sterile bell was rung at around 16.30 WIB as a sign that all inmates returned to their respective blocks. However, at around 17.00 WIB, the alarm was again sounded in Block Ahmad Arief Floor 1A after officers found SAK was not in the cell.

"The prison officers then carried out a search with the help of a number of inmates," he said.

Around 18.02 WIB, said Budi, a resident with the initials D found the victim hanging on the iron railing door of the third floor stairs of the RA Koesnoen Building. The detention center then contacted the East Jakarta Metro Police.

"Around 20.10 WIB, police officers carried out the crime scene (TKP) and lowered the body of the victim, then the body was taken to the Kramat Jati Polri Hospital for further examination," he said.

Budi added that until now the incident was still in the process of deepening and investigation by the East Jakarta Metro Police.
