Harry Kane Misses Penalty, Bayern Munich Beats Real Madrid

JAKARTA - Striker Harry Kane failed to complete the penalty execution in the Champions League match. However, Kane still showed his sharpness by scoring all the goals that brought Bayern to win 2-0 over Union Saint-Gilloise in the qualifying match at the Allianz Arena Stadium, Thursday, January 22, 2026 early morning WIB. The victory that made Bayern displace Real Madrid and return to second place overshadowed Arsenal.

Bayern have already secured their ticket to the Champions League 16th round by surviving in the top eight. After falling in rank because they were displaced by Real Madrid who beat AS Monaco 6-1, Bayern finally returned to the runner-up position after defeating Union SG through Kane's brace.

All of the goals of the England national team captain were created in the second half. He has also bagged 34 goals during 29 matches in various competitions. Now, Kane has collected 103 goals and hopes to lift the wide-eared trophy this season.

The victory over Union SG brings Bayern to 18 points. Three points ahead of Madrid and Liverpool who won 3-0 over Marseille to rise to fourth place.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, who have also qualified for the knockout round by topping the standings, have 21 points. Arsenal achieved a perfect score after winning seven matches in the Champions League qualifiers.

Union SG itself is still stuck in the bottom of the table by occupying the 31st position. Only having six, the top team of the Belgian League must work hard to enter the playoff zone. They have to win the final match in the qualifying phase when facing their guests Atalanta.

In a match that was not attended by 9,300 Bayern hardliners due to sanctions from UEFA, they were forced to work against Union SG's solid game. Even Vincent Kompany's team had difficulty breaking through the opponent's defense even though they completely dominated the match.

Not only that, Union SG almost made a surprise when Promise David's mainstay striker escaped the control of Bayern's back players. But his header could be stopped by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Until the first half was over, Bayern was still unable to break through the Union SG goal.

They had to wait until the 52nd minute to break the deadlock through a set piece. It started from Michael Olise's corner which immediately led to the goal. The ball was then greeted by Kane with a header that broke the Union SG goal.

The 1-0 advantage made Bayern more aggressive in pressing the opponent's defense. Only a minute later, the German Bundesliga leader scored again. This time the goal was from the penalty spot after Kane was brought down by goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen. The referee immediately pointed to the white spot and the penalty was executed by Kane.

In a 2-0 lead, Bayern lost defender Kim Min-jae who received a second yellow card and was followed by a red card in the 63rd minute. The South Korean national team center defender who replaced Dayot Upamecano committed a foul against Raul Florucz who was then given a red card because he had previously received a yellow card.

Only without Kim and having to play with 10 men, Bayern remained solid until the end of the match. Even the hosts had the opportunity to add a goal when they were awarded a penalty after midfielder Kamiel Van De Perre touched the ball in the penalty box while about to throw it away.

The referee reviewed the incident via VAR before confirming Van De Perre's handball and then pointing to the white spot.

However, Kane's execution failed because his kick soared over the crossbar. The failure of the penalty was beyond expectations because Kane can always finish the execution from the white spot.

However, Bayern could still maintain a 2-0 lead until the end of the match. Kane was also satisfied that Bayern won the difficult match.

"We came back in the second half with a very intense game. I think we did well," Kane said, as quoted by france24.

"We scored at the right time. But we were unlucky because of the red card. Even though we played with 10 people we still managed to control the match and get three points," he said.
