Yusril: The idea of the National Police under the Ministry was discussed by the Reform Commission.

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra revealed that there was an idea about a ministry that oversees the National Police, in the internal discussion of the National Police Reform Acceleration Commission.

According to him, this is the same as the Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan) which oversees the Indonesian National Army (TNI).

"All of these ideas have not yet become final decisions. The commission will present several alternative recommendations to the President," said Yusril, quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, January 21.

On the other hand, he said some parties in the Commission still want the police structure as it is today.

Even so, in the end, he said the decision was in the hands of President Prabowo Subianto and the House of Representatives (DPR) because the structure, duties, and responsibilities of the National Police were detailed in the law, even though the 1945 Constitution had regulated it.

The Coordinating Minister conveyed that in the institutional structure of the TNI, there was the Ministry of Defense as a ministry that coordinated personnel, budget, weapons, and others.

Meanwhile, the main task of the TNI, he said, remains under the command of the TNI commander, who is directly responsible to the president.

But in the discussion of members of the Commission for the Acceleration of the Police Reform, Yusril said there was also an opinion that the TNI and the National Police should not be under the same ministry.

The reason is, he continued, the police's devices and equipment only cover one type, unlike the TNI which has three branches, namely the Army (AD), Navy (AL), and Air Force (AD), which have different personnel and weapons.

That way, the assessment and procurement bodies of weapons and so on related to the TNI are coordinated by the Ministry of Defense.

"But if the Police, in fact, the tools are the same, only one, and because of that, yes, it can be handled directly by the Police itself, including discussing the budget, it can be done directly by the National Police Chief with the DPR," said the man who is also a member of the Commission for Acceleration of Police Reform.
