EU Nations Reject US Invitation to Join Gaza Peace Council
JAKARTA - Most European Union (EU) member countries have rejected the United States (US) invitation to join the Gaza Peace Council.
According to a report by the Financial Times citing sources, Wednesday, January 21, many people in Europe are worried that the US initiative intends to shift the role of the United Nations (UN) as a vehicle for ending global conflicts.
As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, the EU countries' concerns also arose because the invitation to the Peace Council membership was also delivered to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Last week, US President Donald Trump announced the formation of the Gaza Peace Council, whose members include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Then, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, World Bank Group President Ajay Banga, and US Deputy National Security Adviser Robert Gabriel.
President Trump also invited leaders from a number of other countries, including Russia and Belarus, to join his pioneering organization.
On Tuesday (20/1), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Putin had accepted an invitation to join the Peace Council.
However, Moscow still has not received further details about the initiative and expects further clarification when communicating with the US side, Peskov said.
