Show Medicines to Journalists, Anwar Usman Admits to Often Missing Meetings Because of Illness

JAKARTA - Constitutional Justice Anwar Usman explained that the reason he was often absent from hearings and meetings at the Constitutional Court (MK) throughout 2025 was because he was sick.

Anwar said that in early 2025, he fell unconscious. However, Anwar did not reveal the type of disease he suffered from.

"I was in the beginning of 2005, yes, it was really sick, I had never felt sick, it could be said that I fell. It's not fainting anymore, I've already forgotten about it. I thought it was gone, I was," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, January 21.

Since then, doctors have advised Anwar to rest a lot and undergo rehabilitation for one to two years. He also admitted that he had to regularly take medication until now.

"Frankly, few people know that I take three times a day, even four times to take medicine," he said while showing the medicines he consumed.

According to him, the pain he suffered recently, among others, was caused by not regularly doing health checks.

"Frankly, I am a person, let's say the state apparatus, who has never used the facility for a general check-up. Well, that's right, it was my mistake starting from [being a judge at] the Supreme Court, although there must be a quota every year," he said.

The Constitutional Court Honor Assembly (MKMK) on Wednesday (31/12/2025) released a report on the implementation of its duties throughout 2025.

In the report, the MKMK, among others, reported the results of monitoring the code of ethics through a recapitulation of the presence of constitutional judges in trials and meetings of judges (RPH).

Based on the results of the MKMK monitoring, Constitutional Justice Anwar Usman was the most frequent absentee in the trial. He was recorded as absent 81 times in plenary sessions and 32 times in panel sessions.

In addition, the former Constitutional Court Chairman was also recorded as absent 32 times in the RPH. Anwar's attendance percentage in the forum of constitutional judges discussing and deliberating was only 71 percent.

When asked about the data, Anwar admitted that he did not receive a recapitulation of the absence of judges published without accompanying reasons. According to him, no judge is absent without a clear explanation.

However, Anwar said the publication of his absence data did not affect him personally. He also admitted not questioning the MKMK.

Previously, MKMK member Yuliandri said the reason behind the judge's absence was indeed worth considering. However, through the attendance data that was published, MKMK only revealed facts as a form of accountability.

"We are very aware that every time we make a decision, especially one that punishes, there must be people who are not happy, of course, but that is why we are held, given the task," said Yuliandri when interviewed at the I Building Hall of the Constitutional Court, Jakarta, Wednesday (7/1).
