Big Success in Las Vegas, Intimate Version of Sphere is Being Prepared to be Built on the outskirts of the US Capital
JAKARTA - The success of Sphere as a magnificent music performance space in Las Vegas seems to be about to expand to the East Coast of the United States.
Sphere Entertainment has officially announced plans to build their second futuristic entertainment arena, which will be located in National Harbor, Maryland, just outside the capital Washington DC.
This move marks a massive expansion of the world's most advanced visual entertainment technology after its phenomenal debut in 2023.
Although it carries similar technology to its predecessor in Las Vegas, which cost $2.3 billion to build, the Washington version of the Sphere will be made on a more intimate scale.
If Las Vegas is able to accommodate up to 20,000 spectators, the new arena at National Harbor is designed with a capacity of around 6,000 seats. Despite its smaller size, developers ensure that the immersive experience offered will not be reduced in the slightest.
The building will still be equipped with an iconic exosphere consisting of millions of LEDs to emit images into the city sky, as well as an interior display area with a resolution of 16K x 16K.
Other facilities include state-of-the-art sound systems, 4D environmental effects, to haptic seats that give the audience a real vibration sensation.
The ambitious project is reportedly to be funded through a combination of public and private funds, including incentives of around US$200 million from state, local governments, and other private parties.
Launching a report from Consequence, the continuation of this project still depends on the final approval of Prince George's County and Maryland State. However, if realized, the economic impact is predicted to be very massive.
The developer claims that this development will absorb around 2,500 jobs during the construction period and almost 5,000 new roles when fully operational.
The presence of Sphere in the region is also projected to contribute more than 1 billion US dollars to the local economy.
Meanwhile, this plan emerged after the dynamics of the development of Sphere in the international market.
Previously, a similar project in London failed completely after Mayor Sadiq Khan intervened on the grounds of energy use issues and negative impacts on residents.
In fact, the plan announced since 2018 is expected to be the largest concert arena in England. However, the failure in London was closed with the confirmation of the presence of a 20,000-capacity Sphere in Abu Dhabi in the near future.
For information, since it opened with the iconic residency of U2 in September 2023, Sphere Las Vegas has become the new Mecca for the global entertainment industry.
Big names like Phish, Dead & Company, The Eagles, and Backstreet Boys have tasted the Sphere stage.
