ChatGPT's Age Verification System Still Misclassifies User Accounts
JAKARTA - OpenAI has launched an automated age verification system for its chatbot users, namely ChatGPT. This system is present to limit harmful content for teenagers, but the technology does not work perfectly.
Launching from PC Mag, OpenAI admits that the accuracy of this technology is not perfect. However, to encourage the accuracy rate, this system tries to analyze various usage signals such as the duration of the account's age, how long the user is actively using ChatGPT, and daily interaction patterns.
If the account is detected as a teenager, the chatbot will automatically filter sensitive content. Various content that will be kept from a teenager's account is violence, unhealthy beauty standards, to dangerous actions such as self-harm behavior.
Unfortunately, this age prediction technology is still wrong in classifying user status. If there is an adult who is detected as a teenager, they can file a report to OpenAI. However, this report must be followed by the submission of a selfie photo through Persona, a third-party identity system.
The accuracy of this feature is certainly a big concern, especially among digital security experts and parents. If an account that should be classified as a child falls into the adult category, this could cause problems in the future.
Mark Cuban, an American figure and businessman, is also one of the parties who criticized this technology. According to Cuban, the technology that OpenAI presents cannot completely overcome the problem of exposure to erotic content for children.
The reason is that teenagers always have a way to get past the security system, especially the system that the company admits is not mature. Until this news was made, OpenAI did not reveal how long it would take to make ChatGPT's age prediction system more accurate.
The problem of predicting the wrong age is not only experienced by OpenAI. Some time ago, Roblox launched a similar ability to limit the interaction of users from different age groups. For example, an adult child aged 18 and over cannot communicate with children under 13 years old.
In order to continue to interact with users in the right age group, all users must verify their identity and face. However, there are still cases in the past when Roblox misclassified certain accounts, such as accounts that should be adults are classified as children or teenagers.
