iPhone 18 Pro Rumors Clarified: Front Camera Remains in the Middle, Dynamic Island is Smaller
JAKARTA - Speculation about the design of the iPhone 18 Pro is heating up again, but it is also quickly cooled. After rumors emerged that the front camera of the iPhone 18 Pro would be moved to the left side of the screen along with the shrinking Dynamic Island, a well-known leaker actually denied the claim and called it a translation error.
The leaker with the account name Instant Digital on the Weibo platform confirmed that information regarding the front camera on the left side of the iPhone 18 Pro was incorrect. According to him, what was actually meant in the Chinese and Korean media reports was not the front camera, but the infrared sensor component of Face ID which is positioned below the left screen.
Instant Digital said this error most likely arose due to inaccurate translation into English. He confirmed that Apple had no plans to move the front camera to the left side of the screen. In his statement, he even closed the speculation with a frustrated tone, stating that it was unlikely to happen.
To strengthen its claim, Instant Digital shared an image that is claimed to be the Face ID module of the iPhone 18 Pro, accompanied by a rough sketch of the position of the component inside the phone body. From the leak, it can be seen that it is likely that only the infrared flood illuminator is placed on the left side, while the front camera remains in its main position.
Face ID technology itself works by projecting infrared light onto the user's face, then reading the reflection using a special camera sensor. If this leak is accurate, then Apple seems to be starting to move some of the Face ID components to the bottom of the screen, although it has not completely eliminated the hole or cutout on the front.
Rumors about an iPhone without a notch or Dynamic Island have actually been circulating since Apple introduced the notch for the first time on the iPhone X in 2017. However, the real change only occurred in 2022 when Apple introduced Dynamic Island, turning a piece of the screen that was previously considered an interruption into an interactive interface element.
Dynamic Island allows the black area at the top of the screen to shrink and expand dynamically to display live activities, notifications, and app navigation. Even so, its existence remains a compromise due to the limitations of camera and sensor technology that have not yet been fully hidden behind the screen.
The latest rumors say Apple is targeting a camera and sensor technology completely under the screen around 2027, which could potentially coincide with the iPhone's 20th anniversary. If that's achieved, Dynamic Island may actually be history.
For now, the main message is clear: the iPhone 18 Pro will not have a front camera in the left corner. Dynamic Island is expected to be smaller, but a total design revolution still has to queue. The Apple rumor world is moving fast, sometimes faster than the technology itself.
