OTT Effective Press Waste in Bantul, Satpol PP Records Significant Decrease
BANTUL - The Bantul Regency Police Unit, Yogyakarta Special Region, said that the hand-catching operation (OTT) against illegal waste disposal perpetrators proved to be effective in encouraging people to dispose of waste in the right place.
Head of the Bantul Jati Bayu Broto Satpol PP said that the publication of the results of OTT through social media made the public think again before throwing garbage in illegal locations.
"In general, the impact of OTT which we then socialize on social media is quite felt, because people think when they want to throw garbage in wild places," said Jati in Bantul, Antara, Tuesday, January 20.
Based on the monitoring of the Bantul Satpol PP, the number of illegal waste disposal points in the area has experienced a significant decline, both along the ring road and on the edge of public roads which were previously often the location of waste piles.
"The current condition we monitor has decreased quite a lot. Although there are some points that are starting to appear again, in general, the locations of wild garbage that we monitored have decreased a lot," he said.
Jati said that throughout 2025, the Satpol PP apparatus together with related institutions had carried out OTT against dozens of perpetrators of illegal waste disposal. Some of the perpetrators were given judicial sanctions in the form of fines, while others were given warnings.
"Those who were affected by OTT and were given justice were approximately 20 perpetrators who were fined. Meanwhile, the number of those who were only given warnings has also been in the dozens since the beginning of 2025," he said.
In addition, the Bantul Satpol PP also took action against a number of illegal waste collectors who continued to operate despite having been given a warning. Some of them were referred to a minor criminal trial (tipiring) and were fined up to Rp. 10 million.
However, Jati admitted that until 2026 there were still unlicensed waste collectors in the Bantul area. The action against the collectors, he said, was waiting for coordination and the transfer of data from the Bantul Environmental Service (DLH) as the agency authorized to issue permits.
"We are waiting for the overflow from the DLH because the licensing data is there. When there are collectors who have been warned by the DLH but do not comply, then it is overflowed to the Satpol PP," he said.
Furthermore, Jati said that the Bantul Satpol PP would study the legal basis for the prosecution of illegal waste disposal in 2026, in line with the changes in regional regulations on prosecution that are being drafted by the Bantul DLH.
"I have noticed that criminal sanctions related to violations of illegal waste disposal seem to have been eliminated. In fact, it is the legal basis for us to carry out OTT. If the legal basis is removed, it is likely that the action will not reach OTT," he said.
