ACL Injury Makes Luiz Gustavo Finish the Season at Arema FC Faster

JAKARTA - Arema FC defender Luiz Gustavo is confirmed to end the 2025/2026 competition season earlier than schedule. This situation occurs because he must undergo surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Luiz's condition was reported by Arema FC team doctor, Nanang Tri Wahyudi. He said that Luiz Gustavo's left knee ligament was torn and needed to be dealt with immediately.

"Luiz Gustavo's left knee ACL ligament was torn, this injury was due to an incident on the field, where he fell and was hit by another player. The medical decision was to undergo surgery," Nanang said, quoted by Antara, Monday, January 19, 2026.

He stated that the implementation of this operation was not taken by the team of doctors alone but based on the results of coordination and approval of the player. Moreover, the operation was considered the best option in dealing with ACL injuries and for the long-term benefit of Luiz Gustavo's career.

"The goal is clear, so that the knee structure can recover perfectly and he can play more optimally," he said.

The footballer who plays as a central defender is the main choice of coach Marcos Santos throughout the Super League this season. With Arema FC, the former Iutano and Vasco Da Gama player has recorded 17 matches with a total of 1,530 minutes of play.

Luiz's absence leaves a hole in the team's back line, even though Julian Guevara, who has a position as a defensive midfielder, can fill Luiz's position.

Currently, Arema FC only has two pure central defenders, namely Anwar Rifai and Odivan Koerich. Meanwhile, Yann Motta has officially left the club.

Meanwhile, Arema FC General Manager, Yusrinal Fitriandi, did not deny the loss of Luiz Gustavo was a heavy blow for Singo Edan. However, he emphasized that his party did not want to sacrifice the player's future.

Management is ensured by him always putting the recovery and health of the 31-year-old Brazilian player as the team's priority.

He also stated that during the surgery and healing process after the medical procedure, Luiz still got his rights according to the contract.

"Luiz Gustavo is still under contract until the end of the competition and will get his rights and full support during the recovery period," he said.
