Facing Waves and Abrasion, the Thousand Islands Regency Government Strengthens Tidung Island Beach
JAKARTA - The Thousand Islands Regency Government is building a coastal protection embankment on Tidung Island to prevent abrasion and reduce the impact of sea waves that threaten residents' settlements and public facilities.
Head of the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-Office, Mustajab, said the embankment was built using a massive cube as the main structure to strengthen the coastline of Tidung Island.
"This embankment is built using massive cubes as the main structure to strengthen the coastline while protecting residential areas and public facilities," said Mustajab in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, January 19.
The construction of the embankment is located in RT 007/02, on the south side of the Cinta Bridge, Pulau Tidung Village, South Thousand Islands District. The length of the embankment reaches 84 meters with a height of about 2.5 meters.
"Until now, the progress of the work has reached about 45 percent," he said.
Mustajab explained that the work began on January 12 and was targeted to be completed within 20 working days. However, the construction process faces weather challenges, especially large waves and western winds that often hinder activities in the field.
"Weather conditions are a challenge in itself, but officers are still trying their best to complete the work on time by prioritizing safety," he said.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Coast Section of the Thousand Islands Wahyu Maulana said that the construction of the embankment was a follow-up to the proposal of the local community.
In addition to installing massive cubes, his party also carried out beach restoration as a long-term protection measure. Restoration is carried out by installing geobags on the north side of the Cinta Bridge to hold the rate of abrasion while maintaining the balance of the coastal ecosystem.
"Currently we are also restoring the beach by installing geobags on the north side of the Cinta Bridge to hold the rate of abrasion while maintaining the balance of the coastal ecosystem," said Wahyu.
He added that the construction of the embankment and the restoration of the beach is expected to strengthen the coastal security infrastructure of Tidung Island and support the sustainability of the tourism sector.
"We hope that the community will also maintain the results of this development so that the benefits can be felt in the long term," he said.
Previously, in mid-2025, the Thousand Islands Water Resources Sub-Department also carried out socialization of the construction of dikes and wave breakers in three villages, namely Kelapa Island, Tidung Island, and Lancang Island, with a project value of Rp. 82.48 billion.
