Schools Should Not Be an Arena of Violence, KPAI Requests to Resolve the Case of a Teacher in Jambi

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has asked the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (Kemdikdasmen) and the regional government to intervene to resolve the case of a SMK teacher who was allegedly bullied by students in Jambi Province through a deliberation.

KPAI member Aris Adi Leksono said the case needed to be thoroughly investigated to find out the root of the problem that triggered the fight between the teacher and the student, so that an objective and balanced fact could be obtained.

"This case must be investigated further, what was the cause of the quarrel. We encourage the Ministry of Education and Culture and regional heads to immediately intervene to resolve through deliberation," said Aris when contacted in Jakarta, Antara, Monday, January 19.

According to Aris, the involvement of the ministry and local government is important so that the school environment is conducive, safe, and comfortable, so that the learning process can run optimally.

"The school environment must be a safe and comfortable space. The relationship between teachers and students needs to be built harmoniously and humanistically so that the learning process runs well and the results are maximized," he said.

However, until now, said Aris, the effort to consult has not found a common ground between the parties concerned.

"There is still no meeting point for deliberation," he said.

He added, based on information received by the KPAI, the students involved are still participating in the learning activities at the school, while the condition of the teacher who was the victim has not received further information updates.

"The information we get is that the children are still going to school. For teachers, there is no update yet," said Aris.

Previously, a teacher at a state vocational school in East Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi, was allegedly a victim of a beating by a number of students. The video recording of the incident went viral and viral on social media.

In the incident, the teacher was reported to have suffered minor injuries to several parts of the body. Meanwhile, both the teacher and the student presented a different chronological version and each insisted on justifying his attitude.
