Aphex Twin Passes Taylor Swift's Monthly YouTube Audience Record
JAKARTA - An interesting phenomenon is happening in the world of global video streaming platforms. The experimental music producer from Britannia, Aphex Twin, unexpectedly managed to surpass the number of monthly listeners of megastar pop Taylor Swift on YouTube.
Based on official data as of January 17, 2026, this musician with the real name Richard D. James recorded a fantastic figure that sparked heated discussions in the music industry.
YouTube Music data shows that Aphex Twin currently has a total of 448 million monthly listeners. The figure is quite ahead of Taylor Swift who has 399 million monthly listeners.
The YouTube Music metric does not only count audio playback purely, but rather the accumulation of activity from the entire platform ecosystem, including music videos on official channels, song usage on YouTube Shorts, to user-generated content.
Aphex Twin's massive spike in listeners is believed to have its roots in passive audience consumption through viral content. The reason is that the old song titled 'QKThr' which was released in 2001 is trending in various short videos in recent months.
This phenomenon proves how content algorithms are able to boost the popularity of underground musicians to a level that surpasses mainstream pop icons.
Interestingly, the intersection of the world between these two contrasting musicians was actually immortalized by writer David Rees through a mashup album titled 'AphexSwift' in 2014.
"I actually think Richard D. James and Taylor Swift have a lot in common besides songwriting talent - or at least, each has characteristics more often associated with the other," Rees said at the time, quoted by NME, Monday, January 19.
Aphex Twin himself is quite active in surprising his loyal fans. After releasing the compilation "From The Merch Desk" (2016-2023), he released two new songs through his personal SoundCloud account last November.
Although he hasn't released a full studio album since "Syro" which won a Grammy in 2014, he celebrated the 30th anniversary of the album "Selected Ambient Works II" in 1994 with an expanded special edition.
Throughout 2025, he was also busy collaborating with the well-known streetwear brand, Supreme, by compiling a playlist containing almost 200 low-tempo songs.
On the other hand, Taylor Swift still maintains her dominance in the conventional music industry through the album "The Life Of A Showgirl" which was released in October last year.
The album officially became the best-selling album of the year in the UK - making Swift the first artist to achieve the title for two consecutive years with a different album since ABBA's achievement in 1977.
