Manchester United Beat Manchester City 2 – 0, A Sweet Start for Michael Carrick
JAKARTA - Michael Carrick had a sweet start as Manchester United (MU) interim coach when defeating Manchester City 2-0 in matchday 22 of the 2025/26 English League at Old Trafford Stadium, Saturday.
The Red Devils' two winning goals were scored by Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgupada in the second half.
The results of this Manchester derby, as reported by Antara, put Manchester United up to fourth place with 35 points. However, their position can still be displaced by Liverpool who have the same points and will only play against Burnley on Saturday at 22.00 WIB.
Meanwhile, this defeat makes City fail to cut the gap with Arsenal at the top of the standings.
City currently has 43 points, six points behind The Gunners who are scheduled to visit Nottingham Forest's headquarters on Sunday at 00.30 WIB, as reported by the official website of the English Premier League.
From the very first minute, MU appeared aggressive and pressured Manchester City's defense. The pressure was successful through the goals of Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes, but both were annulled for offside.
On the other hand, Manchester City tried to get out of the pressure. The best opportunity was obtained by Bernardo Silva through a header from Antoine Semenyo's cross, but the ball still bounced over the crossbar.
Max Alleyne also threatened through a dead ball situation, unfortunately MU goalkeeper Senne Lammens was quick. The score remained 0-0 until halftime.
Entering the second half, the hosts increased the intensity of the attack. Several opportunities were created through Diogo Dalot and Amad Diallo, while Manchester City threatened through Erling Haaland, but his efforts were blocked by the United backline.
The deadlock finally broke in the 65th minute. Bryan Mbeumo took advantage of a quick counterattack after receiving a pass from Bruno Fernandes, then fired a measured shot that Gianluigi Donnarumma failed to stop. The score became 1-0.
United doubled the lead 11 minutes later. Starting from a counterattack, Patrick Dorgu successfully completed Matheus Cunha's pull pass from the left side to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
Manchester City tried to reduce the deficit, one of which was through Rayan Cherki's free kick, but the ball still hit the MU defender.
MU managed to score the third goal in injury time through Cunha, but it was again ruled out for offside.
Until the final whistle, the score of 2-0 remained for Manchester United's victory.
