Waste Collection Rate Reaches 143.824 Tons per Day, LH Minister Involves DPRD to Handle

JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH)/Head of the Environment Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq asked the DPRD to support the strengthening of the budget and supervision in the face of the waste management crisis at the regional level.

Hanif emphasized that conditions on the ground showed that many districts and cities were not able to keep up with the rate of garbage generation, which reached 143,824 tons per day.

"Our national target is very clear, namely 100 percent waste managed by 2029. However, in fact, currently only about 24 percent of it has been managed correctly. This is a red signal that shows that the waste problem can no longer be borne by the central government," said Hanif in a statement confirmed from Jakarta, Thursday, quoted by Antara.

"Political courage and synergy from the local government, especially the DPRD, are needed to present concrete solutions in their respective regions through community empowerment and circular economic transformation," he added.

Minister Hanif reminded that the mandate of Law Number 18 of 2008 concerning Waste Management has given full authority to the regions to carry out management innovations.

He encouraged the DPRD not to hesitate in strengthening regional regulations, allocating adequate budgets, and tightening supervision of the implementation of zero waste policies at the grassroots level.

On this occasion, the Chairman of the Association of Regional Legislative Assemblies of All Indonesia (ADKASI), Siswanto, gave an appreciation and acknowledged the structural challenges in the region.

He said that so far, environmental issues, especially waste management, have often been shifted from the scale of the APBD priority scale compared to other physical infrastructure sectors.

However, through intensive coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, his party is committed to repositioning budget policies at the district level to be more in favor of environmental sustainability.

"This forum is a turning point for us in the DPRD to provide full support. We are ready to strengthen the functions of legislation and supervision to ensure that circular economic policies are implemented in the region, so that waste is no longer seen as a burden on the budget, but rather a resource that has economic value for the community," said Siswanto.
