Coordinating Minister Yusril hopes that the revision of the Election Law will be discussed immediately.
JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra hopes that the revision of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning Elections will be discussed immediately so that election preparations can be carried out properly.
"This is so that if all the laws and regulations are completed at least 2.5 years before the election is held," said Yusril as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, January 14.
He emphasized that the discussion of the revision of the Law should not be too close to the implementation of the election because it requires careful preparation, not only by the General Election Commission (KPU), but also various political parties that participate in the election.
Moreover, he said, if there is a change in the election mechanism, such as the existence of a discourse on the election of regional heads indirectly by the Regional Representative Council (DPRD).
In addition, the Coordinating Minister said that there was still no trial of the material of the law to the Constitutional Court (MK).
"This must be implemented immediately," he said.
The revision of the Election Law has entered the National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) Priority 2026. The Election Law regulates two types of elections, namely the election of president and vice president and the election of members of the legislature.
Meanwhile, the technical selection of regional heads is regulated in a different law, namely the Regional Head Election Law, namely Law Number 10 of 2016.
Previously, the Chairperson of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani said that the revision of the Regional Election Law had not been discussed because its implementation was still long.
The reason is, according to him, the stages of the election that will run first are the legislative elections (pileg) and the presidential and vice presidential elections (pilpres).
"The pileg and the presidential election are not yet, that's it," said Puan after chairing the plenary meeting at the parliament complex, Jakarta, Tuesday (13/1).
He said that currently it is still in the opening phase of the trial. For this reason, he will first look at the political situation after the opening of this trial, especially from the related commission.
According to him, his political party will always open communication with other parties, and will never close the opportunity for communication.
"So there has never been a closed communication, it is open to always communicate," he said.
