2 ATM Robbers with Las in Pangkep Arrested by Police
MAKASSAR - Two perpetrators of breaking into a Bank Mandiri (ATM) by welding were finally arrested by the police team of the South Sulawesi Police.
"Both were secured in the Makassar City area. The perpetrator initials MR after 29 years and OD 43 years old," said the Head of the Sulsel Regional Police, AKP Wawan Suryadinata, as reported by ANTARA, Monday, January 12.
The ATM machine was broken into with an oxy-acetylene welding tool to open the machine's lock. The ATM was on Jalan Poros in the Bungoro District, Pangkajene Kepulauan Regency (Pangkep) in November 2025. The two actions were not noticed by CCTV.
From the footage, the police conducted a series of investigations and identified the perpetrators. His whereabouts were successfully known after following up on the police report received after the two had been on the run for two months.
Wawan explained that from the results of the interrogation, the brain of the ATM machine was broken into by MR. His intention to break into this ATM was carried out after meeting his colleague OD who was a blacksmith with welding skills.
The two then agreed to look for ATMs to be broken into. Furthermore, combing ATM locations that were deserted. Although at first he planned to break into ATMs in the Makassar City area, he did not carry it out because there were many people.
As a result, the two moved with their car carrying a welding machine to the outskirts of the city while looking for a deserted ATM, until finally finding it on Jalan Poros, Bungoro District, Pangkep Regency, South Sulawesi.
"So, this perpetrator is looking for someone who can break into an ATM and find a handyman who has the skills to open iron. They broke into an ATM in Pangkep. Initially in Makassar, but no one was lonely, then they went to Pangkep," he explained.
After monitoring the surrounding conditions were safe, the two perpetrators carried out the action of cutting the padlock and locking the ATM machine using grinding tools and welding tools until it caused a fire due to burning.
"The loss reported from the burglary was around IDR 120 million. From the perpetrator's confession, there were several ATMs that had indeed been carried out (burgled) by the person concerned. Investigation and development will continue in this case," he said.
Previously, from the CCTV footage at the ATM, it was clearly seen that the perpetrator cut the gembong with a grinder and then used a welding tool to open the ATM lock. Sparks and smoke were seen in the ATM room. After the locking door opened, the two swiped the money and fled.
