Donald Trump Will Discuss Starlink Aid to Restore Internet Access in Iran
JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump revealed his plan to discuss with Elon Musk, owner of SpaceX, in an effort to restore Iran's internet service, which is completely paralyzed.
This step was taken after the Iranian government cut off national communication access for four consecutive days. This interruption of internet connectivity occurred after the community carried out a massive demonstration due to a very serious economic crisis.
Trump praised Musk's technological expertise and saw great potential in the SpaceX company in dealing with the crisis situation. He considered using the Starlink satellite internet service to break through the digital blockade imposed by the Iranian government.
"He's very good at that kind of thing, he has a very good company," Trump said when asked about his plans to work with SpaceX, Reuters reported on Monday, January 12.
Even though Trump only wants to discuss this issue with SpaceX, the aerospace company has provided Starlink support to affected Iranians. This is done so that people can continue to share their situation with the outside world.
This is not the first time that Starlink has been deployed to help Iranian citizens. In 2022, the White House, which was then led by Joe Biden, worked with Musk to set up Starlink in Iran after citizens voiced protests over the death of Mahsa Amini.
SpaceX and Elon Musk have not given official comments regarding the plan to hold a special talk with Trump. However, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is scheduled to visit the SpaceX facility to discuss various collaborations in the near future.
