Follow Jejak Indonesia, Malaysia Blocks Access to Grok AI Chatbot

JAKARTA - The Malaysian government blocked access to the Grok chatbot on Sunday, January 11, 2026. This decision was taken after Grok's ability was widely misused to produce vulgar images on X.

This temporary blocking was carried out a day after Indonesia closed access to the chatbot. Malaysia also deliberately blocked Grok because of the many abuses they found. These abuses harm many women and minors.

"(Grok is widely used) to produce obscene, sexually explicit, indecent, highly offensive, and manipulated results without consent, including content involving women and minors," the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said in a statement.

MCMC explained that they had issued a formal notice to X and xAI, the developers of Grok, before this decision was made. In the notice, MCMC demanded the implementation of more effective technical security and moderation.

However, X's response was judged to have failed to address the security risks of the chatbot. Therefore, Malaysia took decisive action by blocking access to Grok to limit the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) leading to deepfakes.

"MCMC considers the reporting mechanism from users insufficient to prevent harm or ensure legal compliance," the agency added.

It should be noted that this blocking is temporary. Malaysia will reopen access to Grok after X or xAI implements more effective security. While waiting for the implementation, MCMC is open to discussing with both companies.
