iPhone Air 2 Potentially Comes with a Thinner and Brighter Screen Thanks to iPhone Fold Technology
JAKARTA - Apple is reportedly considering using a new screen technology that was originally prepared for the iPhone Fold, but could potentially be applied to the next generation of the iPhone Air.
Based on The Elec's report, the iPhone Air 2, which is expected to launch in 2027, could carry Color Filter on Encap (CoE) technology, an innovation that allows the screen to be thinner and brighter without increasing power consumption.
The CoE technology works by eliminating the polarization layer on the screen panel and replacing it with a more efficient color filter system. As a result, light reflections can be reduced and more light from the panel is passed on to the user. In addition to making the screen slimmer, this technology also increases the brightness level with the same power consumption as the previous generation screen.
Initially, the CoE was rumored to debut on the iPhone Fold which was rumored to launch in 2026. However, Apple is said to see an opportunity to utilize similar technology on the iPhone Air 2, given that this model also prioritizes thin design and power efficiency. If this plan is realized, the iPhone Air 2 will be one of the first iPhone models to directly experience the benefits of the new generation screen technology.
The report also confirms rumors that Apple will not release an iPhone Air series every year. With the launch schedule of the iPhone Fold in 2026 and the iPhone Air 2 in 2027, Apple is said to be preparing a gradual launch strategy to bring new technology to the iPhone line.
In terms of suppliers, Samsung Display is said to have the ability to produce CoE panels and plans to increase its production capacity if it is adopted. Meanwhile, LG Display is also said to be considering the CoE production line, although it does not currently have a dedicated facility for the technology.
Apple itself is said to make a final decision regarding the use of CoE on the iPhone Air at the latest in the third quarter of 2026. In addition to the screen, the company is also rumored to be evaluating a number of other new technologies that could potentially be embedded in the iPhone Air 2 in the future.
