Elon Musk Reveals X Algorithm! All Content Recommendation Secrets Will Be Opened Next Sunday
JAKARTA - Elon Musk is making a splash again. The owner of the X platform announced that the platform's latest algorithm will be made public or open source starting next week. This step includes all the code used to determine recommendations for organic uploads and ads that appear in users' timelines.
In his post on X on Saturday, January 10 local time, Musk stated that all new algorithm code would be published within seven days. He also promised that the opening of this code would be carried out regularly every four weeks, complete with developer notes explaining the changes that occurred.
This decision comes amid intense scrutiny of X from various regulators. The platform's recommendation algorithm is being investigated by French authorities and the European Commission. In fact, the European Commission recently extended its data retention order against X until 2026.
The pressure on X is increasing after the Grok chatbot, which is integrated with the platform, is known to have produced content containing child sexual exploitation at the request of users. In addition, Grok is also reported to be used to create sexually manipulated images of women without consent.
Musk has actually been promising algorithm transparency for a long time since taking over Twitter. In 2023, X released the code for the For You feature on GitHub. However, at that time, many parties considered the code that was opened to be incomplete and did not reveal important details, and was not updated regularly.
This time, Musk reiterated his commitment to a different approach. He said that the opening of the algorithm would be carried out continuously so that the public and developers could understand how the X recommendation system works while seeing the changes made over time.
