Liam Rosenior: Chelsea Can Mirror Manchester United's Class of '92
Liam Rosenior says he believes Chelsea can emulate Manchester United's legendary '92 class as they pursue a policy of targeting trophies with young players.
The 41-year-old coach will lead his first match as the Blues boss in the FA Cup Third Round on Sunday, January 11, 2026, early morning WIB, against Championship side Charlton Athletic.
Chelsea have the youngest squad in the Premier League this season - Tosin Adarabioyo is the oldest member at 28. Previous manager Enzo Maresca hinted that a lack of experience in the team was a potential problem as his team struggled to maintain consistency.
However, Rosenior disagrees with that. He took the example of Manchester United, who built their dominance in English football during the 1990s when David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, and Ryan Giggs all made it into the first team at the same time to become a winning streak under Manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
"People will accuse me of this, but I used to be a Manchester United fan. Now I really admire Chelsea."
"I remember Sir Alex Ferguson was brave enough to put six or seven players between 19 and 21 years old in his team, in a team that won the title, because he believed in them."
"What they did was they evolved and won trophy after trophy. That was an incredible period in the club's history. Without that courage, it wouldn't have happened."
"There's potential for that here. There's potential. It hasn't come true. There's potential for that. Let's just say Moises Caicedo or Enzo Fernandez or Cole Palmer or Reece James - world-class players and still very, very young."
"That is the main ambition of this club - to create that again. I'm not trying to say I'm going to make it happen and it will definitely happen."
"However, I will not limit the ambitions of the club. My job, as I have learned in Strasbourg, is to work with young players, improve their abilities, and win games at the same time."
"There's no reason why I can't do the same thing here," said Rosenior, who has coached youth teams at Strasbourg.
Rosenior further revealed that Chelsea also has players who can guide even though they are still young.
Just like Manchester United's Class of '92, which was guided by senior professionals such as Peter Schmeichel, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, and Steve Bruce in his time.
"Yes, you'll see what's going to happen here and the discussions we've had. This project is about winning. The project here is about winning games."
"This is nothing but trying to deliver a trophy for Chelsea. I will work very hard for that and I will quote the question you gave me."
"Whether I'm still at this club in three, four or five years, I think this club will be successful for a long time."
"You have to understand that age is one thing (important). There is also experience here. Enzo has won the World Cup and is a leader in this group. Reece has won titles and many other things."
"I have experienced players here. Their age may be younger, but I have experienced players."
"This group has experienced winning a lot together. That's what I want to use to move forward and create motivation to win more things in the future," he said again.
