Garbage Piles at Kramat Jati Central Market, Pramono: There is No Reason Not to Handle It
JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung urged his subordinates to immediately overcome the problem of waste that is piling up at the Kramat Jati Central Market. The pile of garbage in the market has recently been quite complained by residents.
"I have asked Pasar Jaya, Mr. President, to immediately resolve it," said Pramono at the Kebayoran Lama Health Center, South Jakarta, Friday, January 9.
Pramono emphasized that the DKI Provincial Government had procured nearly 100 new garbage trucks purchased from the 2025 regional income and expenditure budget (APBD). Therefore, Pramono asked his subordinates not to have excuses to solve the garbage problem in the shelter, which is considered crucial.
"For Bantar Gebang, for Rorotan, and including for what is in Kramat Jati. There is no reason not to handle it. I ask that it be resolved immediately," said Pramono.
On the one hand, Pramono explained the plan to build a waste-to-energy plant (PLSTa) to reduce the volume of waste in the capital. Where, every day, Jakarta produces 8,000 tons of waste.
It is planned that four PLTSa will be built, with details of two PLTSa in TPST Bantargebang, one PLTSa in the Sunter area, North Jakarta, and another in West Jakarta.
"Indeed, Jakarta has the specificity of Law Number 2 of 2024 which distinguishes it from other regions, so we are in the process because I also want transparency, I don't want to rush," said Pramono.
In fact, Pramono claimed that many contractors offered themselves to be the implementer of the PLTSa construction in Jakarta. Because, the waste treatment facility project is one of the infrastructure that is a priority for the DKI Provincial Government to be implemented.
"This is a treasure for everyone to compete for. That's why I want everything to be done properly, transparently, and openly. So for that we are also waiting for coordination with Danantara to be decided soon," he said.
The surge in garbage dumping at the Kramat Jati Central Market was complained about by residents around. Responding to the condition, the East Jakarta Environmental Service (Sudin LH) deployed a relief fleet so that market activities and the surrounding environment remained under control.
A total of 25 garbage transport fleets were deployed to handle the accumulation of garbage whose volume exceeded the daily handling capacity. Transportation is carried out intensively with a two-shift system per day to the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant (TPST).
Head of the East Jakarta LH Sub-Directorate Julius Monangta said that waste handling at the Kramat Jati Central Market was actually carried out every day. However, at certain periods, the volume of waste experienced a significant spike, which triggered the accumulation.
"Currently, the waste handling capacity in the area is around 160 tons per day. Meanwhile, during certain seasons, the garbage can reach up to 220 tons per day," said Julius in his statement.
He explained that the difference between the collection of garbage and the daily carrying capacity caused an accumulation that must be immediately broken down through the deployment of additional fleets.
"This means that there is an accumulation or 'storage' of about 60 tons of garbage every day," he said.
The East Jakarta LH Sub-Director targeted that this assistance could be completed within five days. During this period, the fleet was focused on reducing the pile of garbage due to the seasonal surge in the main market area.
In this activity, the East Jakarta LH Sub-Director deployed 23 drivers, two heavy equipment operators, and four field supervisors. The fleet that was deployed consisted of 13 dump trucks, 10 tronton units, and two shovel loaders to accelerate the process of transferring and transporting garbage from the market area.
