Counterattack to President Putin's Residence, Russia Attacks Ukraine with Oreshnik
JAKARTA - Russia on Friday announced the use of Oreshnik hypersonic missiles and a number of other weapons against Ukraine, in response to an attack on the Russian President's official residence.
Ukrainian authorities said four people were killed and at least 22 were wounded in a Russian attack on the capital overnight.
Russia did not say where Oreshnik hit, but Russian media and military bloggers said the missile targeted a large underground natural gas storage facility in Ukraine's western Lviv region.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the attack was retaliation for what Moscow said was a Ukrainian drone attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin's official residence last month, Al Arabiya reported from The Associated Press (9/1).
Ukraine and US President Donald Trump have rejected Russian claims about an attack on the Russian President's official residence.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadoviy said Russia attacked critical infrastructure with ballistic missiles, but did not provide details.
He said the missile was traveling at a speed of 13,000 kilometers (more than 8,000 miles) per hour, while the specific type of rocket was being investigated.
Russia is known to have first tested Oreshnik to attack a factory in Ukraine in November 2024. President Putin claimed that the Oreshnik warhead, which is in large numbers, can be launched at speeds of up to Mach 10 and cannot be intercepted, and some of them used in conventional attacks can be as powerful as nuclear attacks. Oreshnik can also carry nuclear weapons.
Moscow's leaders have warned the West that Russia could use the next Oreshnik against Kyiv allies who allowed it to attack Russian territory with their long-range missiles.
After last night's attack on the Ukrainian capital, the dead included an emergency medical aid worker, said the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko. Five rescue workers were injured while responding to the location of the ongoing attack, said the Ukrainian security service.
Several districts in Kyiv were hit by the attack, said the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko.
In Desnyanskyi District, a drone fell on the roof of a multi-storey building. At another address in the same district, the first two floors of a residential building were damaged.
Meanwhile, in Dnipro District, parts of the drone damaged a multi-storey building and a fire occurred.
Water and electricity supplies were cut in parts of the capital as a result of the attack, said Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
