PM Sanchez Says Spain Ready to Send Peace Mission to Palestine

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Thursday that Spain was ready to deploy peacekeepers to Palestine when conditions allowed, just as it was ready to send troops to Ukraine.

"I will propose to parliament, when the opportunity arises, that we send peacekeepers to Palestine, after we can see how to advance this peace mission," he told Spanish ambassadors in Madrid, launching Daily Sabah (9/1).

"Of course, we do not forget Palestine and the Gaza Strip. Spain must actively participate in rebuilding hope in Palestine. The situation there remains intolerable," he added.

PM Sanchez also reiterated Spain's willingness to deploy troops to Ukraine if a peace deal is reached, calling the current moment "critical" and "decisive" to achieve peace there.

"If Spain has sent peacekeepers to many regions far from our country, how is it possible that we do not send peacekeepers to Ukraine, a European country?" he added.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin opposes the presence of foreign peacekeepers in Ukrainian territory.

The Spanish government, which recognized the State of Palestine in 2024, has been one of Europe's most vocal critics of Israel's genocidal war in Gaza, which was launched after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

At the end of last year, PM Sanchez called for increased awareness of the "dramatic situation" experienced by Palestinians during a meeting in Madrid with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
