Nenek Dipukuli Usai Larang Tambang Ilegal, DPR: Usut, Jangan Ada Beking!

Member of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Mafirion, strongly condemned the act of persecution against an elderly man named Saudah (68) in Pasaman Regency, West Sumatra, after prohibiting illegal mining activities on his land.

Mafirion assessed that the act of persecution was a serious violation of Human Rights (HAM) which must be investigated to the root of the problem.

"This is an inhumane act. The victim is an elderly person who should have received special protection from the state. Physical violence in any form, especially against vulnerable groups, cannot be tolerated," Mafirion told reporters, Friday, January 9.

It is known that the violence against Mrs. Saudah occurred in Jorong Lubuak Aro, Nagari Padang Matinggi Utara, Rao District, on Thursday, January 1, evening. As a result of the attack, the victim suffered serious injuries to the face and had to undergo intensive treatment at the hospital.

Mafirion emphasized that violence against vulnerable groups such as the elderly is a very heinous act. This action, according to him, has violated the right to security and human dignity guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution and Law Number 39 of 1999 concerning Human Rights.

"Moreover, it is clear that the victim is a middle-aged woman who is relatively weak and has no chance to fight physically," said the member of the human rights commission.

Mafirion also highlighted the strong suspicion that this persecution was closely related to illegal gold mining activities in the area. The PKB legislator from the Riau District warned the authorities not to be selective in carrying out the legal process.

"Law enforcement should not be sharp down and blunt up. The apparatus must dare to investigate thoroughly, not only the immediate perpetrators, but also the parties who are the brains, backers, or parties who benefit from illegal mines," said Mafirion.

Mafirion also urged Komnas HAM and Komnas Perempuan to immediately intervene to conduct an in-depth investigation, and asked the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) to provide maximum protection for Saudah.

He assessed that allowing illegal activities would only trigger repeated social conflicts in society.

"The case of Nenek Saudah must be a stark reminder that violence against citizens, especially the elderly, is not just a common crime. This is a serious human rights issue that requires the full responsibility of the state and all parties," he concluded.
