Volkswagen Prepares a Major Facelift for the ID.3, New Design and Cheaper Price

JAKARTA - Volkswagen is preparing a more comprehensive update, bringing changes to its style, technology, and battery options for the ID.3 compact hatchback.

Citing Carscoops, Friday, January 9, the car that has received a refresh in 2023 was caught on camera undergoing cold weather testing, ahead of its debut expected in the second quarter of this year.

As is often the case with Volkswagen prototypes, this test car uses camouflage that is cleverly applied to mimic the current model.

However, if you look more closely you will see a sticker that hides the updated design elements on the grille and headlights. This new front component will likely be in line with the visual identity of the ID.

The side profile and the back of the prototype look almost identical to the current ID.3. However, it is estimated that it will not last long. As development progresses and new prototypes emerge, more visible changes will appear ahead of the launch.

Previously, VW Development Head Kai Grunitz, had said that revealing that the updated ID.3 and ID.4 would have a completely new design language. This suggests that the revision will be much more in-depth than just an update to the LED lights.

Inside, the hatchback will follow VW's wider trend of reintroducing physical buttons, just like the new ID. Polo. Interior quality will also be improved, with better materials and design elements.

Apart from style and technology, this MEB-based model will also get technical improvements, which will improve performance, range, and charging time. It is likely that the sporty GTX variant will also switch to the GTI badge, in line with VW's branding evolution.

Volkswagen is reportedly preparing an entry-level variant that uses a more affordable lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The move could help lower the starting price, an important strategy as VW faces a barrage of budget-friendly electric cars made in China.
