Elpiji explosion burns down house in Surabaya, 6 people injured

SURABAYA - A leak of an LPG cylinder triggered an explosion and a massive fire on Jalan Simo Gunung, Surabaya, Thursday, January 8, early morning. Six family members, including two small children, were injured in the tragic incident.

The silence on Jalan Simo Gunung I, Surabaya, was broken by two loud bangs. A two-story house was engulfed in flames after a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder in the building's kitchen exploded.

The incident began when one of the residents was preparing a yellow rice business for the morning. Unknowingly, the gas had filled the room due to a leak in the tube. A spark from the stove immediately ignited an explosion that spread quickly throughout the building.

Head of the DPKP Fire Department of the City of Surabaya M Rokhim confirmed that six people in one family were evacuated to the William Booth Hospital. Among the injured victims, there were two children aged 1 and 10 years who suffered burns with a severity of 5 to 15 percent.

"The fire is suspected to have originated from a leak in an LPG cylinder. All victims are currently receiving intensive care," said Rokhim.

After the incident, a police line had been set up at the location for further investigation. The house, which is now left in ruins, caused material losses estimated at hundreds of millions of rupiah.
