Case of Rp2.18 Trillion Chromebook, Nadiem Makarim's Fate Determined Next Week
JAKARTA - The fate of former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek) Nadiem Makarim will be determined next week. The panel of judges of the Corruption Court (Tipikor) in Central Jakarta scheduled to read the interim verdict on the alleged corruption in the procurement of Chromebooks and chrome device management (CDM) on Monday, January 12.
The Chairman of the Panel of Judges, Purwanto S Abdullah, conveyed that the interim ruling would determine whether the Nadiem Makarim case would proceed to the proof stage or be stopped.
"For this to be conveyed at the next hearing on Monday, January 12, 2026," said Purwanto in a follow-up hearing at the Corruption Court in Central Jakarta, Thursday.
The interim ruling is a temporary ruling issued by the judge before touching the substance of the case. This decision is usually given after the defendant has filed an objection or objection to the prosecutor's indictment, to assess formal aspects, such as the completeness and clarity of the indictment.
"For this application, it is not yet certain whether the case will continue or stop. We will still consult to assess objections or objections, or in the new KUHAP it is called resistance. If it is granted, the case is over," explained Purwanto.
Previously, Nadiem Makarim expressed his objection to the prosecutor's indictment, especially regarding the allegation that he had made a profit of IDR 809 billion. According to Nadiem, the accusation was not accompanied by clear evidence.
"This indictment is not thorough because it does not explain in full the source of my wealth, which is actually very easy to trace from the tax report. My wealth comes only from one main source, namely the value of my shares in PT AKAB," said Nadiem when reading the objection at the hearing on Monday (5/1/2026).
He also emphasized that there was no connection between the alleged transaction of Rp. 809 billion and the report of his wealth. "In fact, there is no connection at all. This accusation is unclear and does not contain causality between one fact and another," he added.
In this case, Nadiem Makarim is charged with the crime of corruption in the procurement of Chromebooks and CDM which is suspected of causing losses to the state treasury of up to IDR 2.18 trillion. The act is said to have been carried out with a number of parties, namely Ibrahim Arief alias Ibam, Mulyatsyah, Sri Wahyuningsih, and Jurist Tan.
In addition, the prosecutor also accused Nadiem of enriching himself by Rp. 809.59 billion which was allegedly derived from PT Aplikasi Karya Anak Bangsa (PT AKAB) through PT Gojek Indonesia.
For these charges, Nadiem was charged with Article 2 paragraph (1) or Article 3 in conjunction with Article 18 of Law Number 31 of 1999 concerning the Eradication of Corruption as amended by Law Number 20 of 2001, in conjunction with Article 55 paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code. 1.
