EU Orders X to Keep Grok-Related Documents Until End of 2026
The European Commission has ordered the social media platform X to store all internal documents and data related to the Grok artificial intelligence chatbot until the end of 2026. The order was delivered following serious concerns about illegal content generated by the AI feature.
European Commission technology spokesman Thomas Regnier said Grok was known to produce anti-Semitic content as well as sexually suggestive images involving minors. According to him, such content is illegal, unacceptable, and contrary to the values and fundamental human rights upheld by the European Union.
Regnier explained that this data storage order is a continuation of previous steps that have been taken against X. Last year, the European Commission also sent an order related to the platform's recommendation algorithms and systems that are suspected of playing a role in the spread of illegal content.
The European Commission has received a formal response from X to the information request submitted and is currently evaluating the answer. Regnier emphasized that the Digital Services Act (DSA) has clear provisions for online platforms, and compliance with EU law is an obligation, not an option.
In December 2025, the European Commission imposed a fine of 120 million euros on X. The fine was the first decision related to non-compliance with the DSA. Later, it was reported again that there was a case of Grok that produced images of women and minors in minimal clothing in response to user requests.
