Only in this country, Mitsubishi Triton gets a new face
JAKARTA - Mitsubishi is secretly refreshing the appearance of the Mitsubishi Triton. But interestingly, the new design is only given to one variant, namely the Triton Street which is marketed exclusively in Thailand.
This update makes the double cabin pickup truck look different from the regular version of Triton. The Triton Street is built on the Mega Cab body configuration, a position between the Single Cab and Double Cab.
The most striking changes are visible on the front, with a new grille that looks more assertive and no longer fully follows the standard Triton's Dynamic Shield design language. The face looks more aggressive, even at first glance reminiscent of the Stormtrooper helmet in the Star Wars movie.
The nuance is strengthened by a large black under guard plate and a revised bumper air hole design. However, its status as an entry-level variant makes the Triton Street still use halogen headlights and no fog lights.
As the name suggests, Triton Street is focused on paved road use, this pickup carries a new 17-inch black alloy wheel with standard suspension height. The color choices are also made simple, only available in Solid White, Blade Silver, and Graphite Gray, all of which are combined with contrasting black accents.
Behind the engine hood, the Triton Street is equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 148 hp of power and 330 Nm of torque. Mitsubishi chose this standard engine specification, not the 181 hp more powerful version that is usually attached to the high-end Triton variant.
Power is delivered via a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. There is no four-wheel drive option, but the Street variant is already equipped with an active limited-slip differential that works by braking the wheels that lose traction and channeling torque to the wheels with better grip.
As the cheapest Mega Cab model, the Triton Street features are quite functional. The list of equipment includes fabric seats, three airbags, a two-speaker audio system, hill start assist, Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM), and a 10-inch infotainment screen.
In Thailand, this car is already sold with a starting price of 649,000 baht or equivalent to Rp. 346 million, reported from Carscoops, Thursday, January 8. It is still a question mark whether this new face will be applied to other Triton variants in the upcoming refresh, or remain an exclusive experiment for the Thai market.
For your information, the latest generation of the Mitsubishi Triton was launched in 2023. This means that this pickup truck has the opportunity to receive a mid-cycle update in 2027, both in terms of design and technology, in order to maintain its competitiveness in the increasingly crowded mid-sized pickup segment.
In this class, Triton has to face directly with Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Nissan Navara which share the platform with it. Other rivals also come from Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, to newcomers such as Kia Tasman and a row of Chinese pickups that are increasingly aggressive to enliven the market.
