Malaysia Open 2026: Febriana/Meilysa Hajar Second Seeds

JAKARTA - The women's doubles team of Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari managed to defeat the second seed of the host, Pearly Tan/Thinaah Muralitharan, to secure a ticket to the 2026 Malaysia Open quarterfinal.

Febriana/Meilysa made a surprise to defeat the world's second-ranked pair in a straight two-game match 26-24 and 21-17 which took place at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

"Alhamdulillah we were able to play well today. From the beginning we were ready to play like what with all the pressure because they played in front of their own public, but we focused on our game only," said Febriana in a statement.

This result also repaid the pain that Febriana/Meilysa got in the final round of the 2025 SEA Games last month. At that time, they lost three games against Pearly/Thinaah so they failed to get a gold medal.

Febriana said that the defeat they felt in the biennial multi-branch sports festival managed to become a source of inspiration for their latest meeting.

"We still remember the feeling in the SEA Games final yesterday, we were ahead in the third game, but were followed and finally lost to them. We remember the pain and it is an additional motivation not to repeat it again today," he said.

Indonesia has secured two tickets to the quarter-finals of the BWF Super 1000 event. The other ticket was won by men's singles shuttler Jonatan Christie.

Jonatan also defeated the host representative to continue his journey in the tournament. The 2018 Asian Games gold medallist eliminated Leong Jun Hao.
