Roblox Requires Users to Verify Age to Access Chat Features
JAKARTA - Roblox has launched a new policy requiring all users to verify their age. Without verification, users will not be able to use the chat or chat features on the platform.
This policy was taken to increase Roblox's efforts to maintain child safety, especially in the midst of various legal pressures and investigations in a number of countries. This verification process will later use a camera to scan the user's face directly.
Roblox also reminds users not to worry about this camera-based verification system. All image or video data taken during the age identification process will be deleted by the third-party vendor that manages the system.
"Today, the age verification requirement for chatting... is rolling out globally wherever the chat feature is available," Roblox said in its official blog. "Over the next week, this notification will be rolled out to all regions where the chat feature is available."
For users over 13 years old who do not want to use the camera verification system, Roblox provides an identity verification option using official documents, such as the Population Identification Card (KTP) or other personal cards. That way, age verification will be mandatory in the future.
Once verified, users will be grouped into six age categories, ranging from under 9 years old to over 21 years old. For children under the age of 9, the chat feature will be disabled by the system by default. The feature can only be accessed if parents provide special permission through age verification.
"Users who have verified their age (13 years and older) can connect and chat more freely with people they know outside their age group using our Trusted Connections feature," Roblox explained. "Age-based chat is designed to prevent children under 16 from communicating with adults."
