South Tangerang in Emergency Waste Management, 200 Tons per Day Diverted to Cileungsi
TANGERANG - The South Tangerang (Tangsel) City Government, Banten, has begun diverting 200 tons of waste to a landfill in Cileungsi, Bogor Regency, West Java, after suspending shipments to the Cilowong Final Waste Processing Site (TPAS) in Serang City.
"As much as 200 tons of waste per day will be sent to Cileungsi for the next 14 days," said South Tangerang Mayor Benyamin Davnie, as quoted by Antara on Thursday, January 8.
He explained that the temporary diversion to Cileungsi is a solution to waste management in the area following the Serang City Government's policy of temporarily halting waste shipments from South Tangerang to the Cilowong TPAS.
"This decision to Cileungsi was taken to ensure there are no piles of waste in residential areas or public spaces in South Tangerang," he said.
The South Tangerang City Government is committed to continuing to find solutions to the waste problem, as it is still working on a management collaboration with the Serang City Government.
"I firmly convey to the public that the South Tangerang City Government will not stop working and will not give up. This suspension of waste shipments to Cilowong is temporary," he said.
He explained that handling the waste problem is the government's responsibility and will not be burdened on the public.
He stated that this situation provides an opportunity for the South Tangerang City Government to fundamentally evaluate the system so that it does not continue to rely on emergency inter-regional cooperation.
"This situation provides momentum for us to accelerate comprehensive and sustainable improvements to the waste management system, so that South Tangerang can be self-sufficient in waste management in the future," he said.
Previously, the Serang City Government temporarily suspended waste shipments from South Tangerang City to the Cilowong Waste Disposal Site (TPSA) starting Tuesday afternoon to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental and social impacts.
"This suspension is being implemented while awaiting the evaluation results, which will be submitted to the Mayor of Serang to determine the next policy direction," said Farach Richi, Head of the Serang City Environmental Agency (DLH).
His office has sent a letter to the South Tangerang City Environmental Agency (DLH) regarding this temporary suspension. The evaluation focuses on technical readiness at the Cilowong Waste Disposal Site (TPSA) and acceptance by the surrounding community.
This step was taken in response to public input regarding the impact of waste transportation.
As a mitigation effort, the Serang City Environmental Agency has actually tightened supervision by establishing checkpoints at Kilometer 68 and in the Cakung area.
