Proteins Recommended by Experts to Maintain Heart Health

JAKARTA - The food consumed has a great influence on the health of body organs, including the heart. For the heart, one of the important nutritional intakes that are good for maintaining its health is protein.

The quality of protein consumed is more important than just the amount. A diet rich in quality protein, combined with vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can reduce the risk of hypertension, heart attacks, and strokes.

"Quality protein helps maintain ideal body weight and provides raw materials for muscles. Combined with strength training, this supports overall health," said Medical Director of Cardiology, Dr. Renato Apolito, MD.

Research shows that protein can help maintain muscle, lose weight, and prevent obesity-related problems, a major risk factor for heart disease.

To maintain heart health and the body as a whole, it is recommended to consume protein of about 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day.

"Usually we recommend about 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. However, needs can be different depending on activity, age, and health conditions such as pregnancy or breastfeeding," explained interventional cardiologist, Dr. Cheng-Han Chen.

The best protein-containing foods for heart health are nuts. This is because nuts contain other important nutrients such as omega-3, fiber, antioxidants.

"Almonds and walnuts are rich in protein, healthy fats, and antioxidants," said Dr. Mohanakrishnan Sathyamoorthy, MD.

In addition to protein, the content of monounsaturated fat, fiber, and plant sterols in nuts helps keep weight and cholesterol under control. With ideal body weight and controlled cholesterol, heart health can also be better maintained.
