Polresta Barelang Names Suspects in the Fire of a Ship at PT ASL that Killed 14 People
BATAM - The Barelang Police, Riau Islands, have named a number of people as suspects in the fire on the MT Federal II ship at the shipyard owned by PT ASL Marine Shipyard which killed 14 workers on October 15, 2025.
The head of the Barelang Police, Kombes Anggoro Wicaksono, said that there were about six to seven people who were named as suspects in the case.
"There are (appointed) suspects of about six to seven people," said Anggoro as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, January 6.
He said the determination of the suspect was made after a joint trial with the Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimum) of the Pola Kepri some time ago.
Until October 2025, investigators have examined 43 people as witnesses, from PT ASL Marine Shipyard, expert witnesses, and city and provincial Manpower Offices.
The mid-level police officer did not specify the initials of the suspects because the investigation process was still ongoing.
"While the process is still ongoing," he said.
According to him, after the determination of the suspects was carried out, his party would call the suspects to be questioned further.
The head of the Barelang Police Reserse Criminal Investigation Unit, Kompol Debby Tri Andrestian, also did not want to mention the initials of the suspects because they were still being investigated.
"For the completeness, please wait, because it is still undergoing examination," said Debby.
The fire incident on the tanker MT Federal II which was docking or repairing at PT ASL Marine Shipyard occurred on Wednesday (15/10) 2025, where 14 workers died, and 17 others were injured.
The fire on the tanker MT Federal II was the second time, after the previous one in June which killed four people and injured five others. In this incident, three sub-contractors were named as suspects, and are undergoing trial at the Batam District Court.
On Tuesday (30/12), a work accident at PT ASL Marine Shipyard occurred again, one worker was killed after being electrocuted, Polresta Barelang is also investigating the cause of the work accident.
