US Military Aggression in Venezuela, House of Representatives Commission I Requests the Republic of Indonesia to Prioritize the Safety of Indonesian Citizens

JAKARTA - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sukamta, asked the Government of the Republic of Indonesia through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) of the Republic of Indonesia to prioritize the safety of Indonesian citizens (WNI) after the military aggression of the United States (US) led by President Donald Trump ended in the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

"Commission I encourages the government, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to continue to monitor the security conditions in Venezuela intensively, including ensuring that the data on Indonesian citizens is accurate and real time," Sukamta told reporters, Monday, January 5.

"If the situation develops in a direction that endangers the safety of Indonesian citizens, then contingency measures, including evacuation options, must be prepared carefully and measured," continued the PKS politician.

Sukamta also asked the government to activate the protection protocol for Indonesian citizens, one of which is by increasing communication between representatives of the Republic of Indonesia and Indonesian citizens in the affected areas.

"The government (must) activate the protection protocol for Indonesian citizens, including by increasing communication between representatives of the Republic of Indonesia and Indonesian citizens in the affected areas, providing security advice, and ensuring that emergency communication channels can be accessed at all times," he said.

Furthermore, the head of the commission for foreign relations and defense also encouraged the government to take active and consistent steps with an active free foreign policy. Sukamta emphasized that the DPR RI rejects all forms of use of force that violate state sovereignty.

"Indonesia needs to prioritize the peaceful resolution of conflicts through international law and multilateral mechanisms, including the United Nations," he said.

Sukamta also said that the Indonesian government must continue to coordinate with friendly countries and international organizations to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

"Commission I also reminds the government to anticipate the indirect impact of the conflict, such as global economic turmoil, energy stability, and the potential for regional instability that could affect Indonesia's national interests," he said.

Sukamta also ensured that the DPR RI would oversee the development of the conflict, especially the security of Indonesian citizens.

"Commission I will continue to carry out oversight functions and ensure that the state is present in protecting every Indonesian wherever they are, while maintaining Indonesia's position as a country that consistently fights for peace and international justice," he concluded.
