Denmark Ultimatum Trump Don't Try to Caplock Greenland
Denmark has warned the United States (US) to stop "threatening" and interfering in its sovereignty over Greenland.
This was emphasized by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen after US President Donald Trump said he "really" needed the Greenland region on Sunday local time, a day after the US arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
"I have to say this very clearly to the United States: it is really unreasonable to say that the United States should take over Greenland," Mette said in a statement on Sunday night, quoted by AFP.
He then called on the US to stop "threatening its historic allies."
The US military intervention in Venezuela has revived concerns about Greenland, which has repeatedly been discussed as being annexed by the US through Trump's statements.
European countries known to be allies of the US were shaken by Trump's actions who sent his military on Saturday to attack Caracas and arrest Nicolas Maduro who is now being held in New York.
Trump said the US would "dominate" Venezuela indefinitely and tap its vast oil reserves.
Mette's anxiety also emerged after Trump confirmed that the US military would annex Greenland during an interview with The Atlantic magazine on Sunday local time, followed by the social media posts of Trump's most influential aide's wife showing Greenland with the colors of the US flag.
In the case of Greenland, Trump claimed to make the Danish territory part of the US that serves US national security interests, given its strategic location in the Arctic.
Greenland is also known to be rich in important minerals used in the high-tech sector.
"We do need Greenland, of course. We need it for defense," Trump told The Atlantic.
