Only Four Victims Identified from the Deadly New Year's Eve Incident in Switzerland that Killed Dozens of People
JAKARTA - The fatal fire at the Le Constellation bar, a luxury ski resort area in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026 (New Year's Eve / New Year's Eve 2025 to 2026). This incident killed more than 40 people and injured more than 100 people. The identification process is still ongoing, many of whom have suffered severe burns. The majority of the victims are young people aged 10 to early 20s.
According to the initial investigation of the prosecutor and the police of Canton Valais (announced on January 2, 2026), the main cause of the fire was allegedly fireworks (sparklers or Bengal candles) that were placed on top of champagne bottles.
The video before the fire that went viral on social media also showed that this was the cause. It can be seen, these candles are raised high by the waiter/bartender during the celebration, and the flame from the sparkler touches the ceiling of the bar which is covered with sound-absorbing material (acoustic foam) and wood, so that the flame immediately catches and spreads very quickly.
Now, Swiss police on Saturday, January 3 announced that they had identified the first four victims who died in the fire. The police also said they had handed over the bodies of the four victims, all of whom were local citizens, to their respective families.
Launching ANTARA, it is said that the identification process has been carried out thoroughly for the bodies of two women aged 21 and 16 years and two men aged 18 and 16 years.
Police added that the investigation and identification process for other victims is still ongoing. Any updates will be provided as soon as possible. The latest information about the victims will not be released to respect the privacy of their families. According to the police, most of the injured victims have been identified, but many survivors are still in critical condition.
