Indonesian Embassy in Caracas Monitors the Situation in Venezuela, Indonesia Emphasizes Respect for International Law and the UN Charter
JAKARTA - Indonesia emphasized the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter, following the escalation in Venezuela, while the Indonesian Embassy in Caracas ensured that it continued to monitor the situation.
Explosions were heard in several areas of Caracas on Saturday, following an attack reportedly carried out by the US military, targeting a number of targets, after increasing tensions between the two countries in recent times.
"The Indonesian government through the Indonesian Embassy in Caracas continues to carefully monitor the development of the situation in Venezuela. Together with all Indonesian representatives in the region, the Indonesian Embassy in Caracas actively ensures the condition and safety of all Indonesian citizens who are in Venezuela," tweeted the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a post on social media X, Saturday (3/1).
"Indonesia also calls on all parties concerned to prioritize a peaceful settlement through de-escalation measures and dialogue, and to continue to prioritize the protection of civilians," the ministry continued.
Previously, explosions were heard in several areas of the capital Caracas around 02:00 local time on Saturday, AFP reported.
CBS News and Fox News, citing anonymous sources, said the US military was directly involved in the operation.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil strongly condemned the United States' aggression against his country, which he said was carried out in civilian and military areas in the capital Caracas, as well as the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira, which were responded to by President Nicolas Maduro who ordered the full implementation of the national defense plan, quoted from Antara.
Tensions between the two countries have been rising in recent times with the United States' actions attacking targets related to what they accuse of drug trafficking activities, blocking tankers, seizing ships to the presence of US military near Venezuelan waters.
"Indonesia emphasizes the importance of respect for international law and the principles in the UN Charter," said the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
