Ministry of PPPA Controls Child Murder Case of Mother in Medan

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Empowerment of Women and Child Protection (PPPA) will oversee the handling of the case of a child who abused his mother to death, by prioritizing the principle of the best interests of the child and ensuring that all children's rights are fulfilled.

"We respect and appreciate the ongoing investigation process by Polrestabes Medan which implements the principle of the best interests of the child and the child witness. Appreciation also to other parties in authority, who have tried to implement the mandate of Article 18 of Law Number 11 of 2012 concerning the Juvenile Criminal Justice System (SPPA)," said the Minister of PPPA, Arifah Fauzi when confirmed in Jakarta, Friday.

Arifah Fauzi conveyed condolences and deep concern over the tragic incident.

"We express our deepest condolences for this tragic event," he said.

The Minister of PPPA emphasized that this case would be followed up to the end, because the best interests of the child were the main priority. The child is currently in a safe house so that the rights of other children are still met, especially the right to education.

In addition, in accordance with Article 19 of the SPPA Law, regarding the identity of the child, the Minister of PPPA appeals to all parties involved in handling this case to ensure the confidentiality of the child's identity in reporting, both in print and electronic media.

"The Medan Police also ensure that assistance will continue to be provided to the child witness who is the biological brother of the child. During the handling process, the child has received psychological assistance and this assistance will continue until and after the court decision," said Minister Arifatul Choiri Fauzi.

Previously, a child who was sitting in a sixth grade SD (12) class killed his mother, F (42), in Medan City, North Sumatra, while the victim was sleeping on Wednesday (10/12) morning.

The child allegedly committed the crime because he was upset with his mother who often scolded him, his older brother, and his father.

Polrestabes Medan has designated the child as a child in conflict with the law (ABH) in this case.
