Google Revamps Reading Mode in Chrome for Android
Google is redesigning the Reading Mode in Chrome on Android, making it more reliable and allowing users to manually enable it on any web page. This update also retains familiar customization options, such as font styles, color themes, and larger text sizes to improve readability.
Who remembers when most websites weren't optimized for mobile devices? Those were tough times indeed. Today, many websites are optimized for smaller, narrower screens, but are they perfect? Not necessarily. Pages with a lot of text can sometimes still be a little hard to read. The good news is that Google is fixing that with a new Reading Mode redesign for Chrome on Android.
Redesigned Reading Mode in Chrome Android
First of all, for those who are not familiar, Reading Mode is not a new feature. This feature basically eliminates all distractions from a page, such as ads, images, and videos. It presents text in a cleaner format, making it easier for users to read news articles or long articles without all that clutter.
Now, Chrome on Android has a Reading Mode that works well, but Google decided to give it a redesign. In the old Reading Mode, this feature did not always appear consistently in every article that should be able to take advantage of it. This can be annoying, but this update should fix it.
According to 9to5Google, this change allows users to "force" Reading Mode on any page. Users will find this feature in the three-dot menu, under "Listen to this page".
Previously, only pages that supported Reading Mode featured a big button, but as we said, the problem was that this was inconsistent. At least with this change, users can force a page to enter Reading Mode if desired.
Customization Options
Public have different preference of comfort when reading. Some prefer dark background, some bright. This update maintains the customization option from the old design.
Users can choose between Light, Dark, or Sepia color tones. They also have the option to increase the text size up to 250%, perfect for those with vision impairment. Then, users can choose between different font styles, such as Sans Serif, Serif, or Mono.
Note that your preferences will be saved for different pages. So, if you are worried about having to repeat the settings every time you open a new page, don't worry.
According to reports, this feature should be available for those running Chrome 143 on the stable channel. However, it has not spread widely. But if you feel this redesign could be useful, keep monitoring the updates.
