BMKG: A number of areas are potentially heavy rain on the first day of 2026

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reminded people to increase their preparedness regarding the potential for heavy to very heavy rain in a number of areas on Thursday, January 1, which begins the new year 2026.

BMKG weather practitioner Miftah Ali said in a statement quoted by Antara in Jakarta, that the areas are Aceh, West Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, West Kalimantan, and North Kalimantan.

Miftah said that for major cities in Indonesia, there is the potential for lightning in Padang, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Yogyakarta, Tanjung Selor, and Banjarmasin.

"Then the potential for moderate rain is in Bengkulu, Serang, and Samarinda," he said.

He also reminded of the potential for light rain in most of Sumatra, most of Java, Pontianak, and Palangkaraya.

As for the eastern part of Indonesia, he said, it is necessary to be aware of the potential for rain accompanied by lightning in Mamuju, Kupang, and Merauke.

Then, he said, there was the potential for moderate rain in Makassar and Kendari.

"There is also the potential for light rain in Palu, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, and part of Papua," he said.

Meanwhile, the potential for cloudy to cloudy weather in Denpasar, Mataram, Jayapura, and Manado.

On that occasion, he also mentioned that the former Tropical Cyclone Hayley in the next 24 hours is predicted to have become a tropical low as it enters the Australian mainland.

"It is predicted that the former Tropical Cyclone Hayley will not have an impact on extreme weather and waters in the Indonesian region in the next 24 hours," he said.
