Train Natural Chemical Leak Explodes in Kentucky, Fire Spreads to Rural Areas

CSX train derailed in Kentucky experienced a chemical leak that triggered a fire in the countryside around the scene.

CSX said in a statement that the 31-car train derailed at around 6.15am in Todd County, Kentucky, USA.

The incident caused the liquid sulfur cargo from one car to leak, resulting in a fire spreading to the rural area around the location. The fire was extinguished shortly afterwards.

"We appreciate the quick response and coordination of local emergency responders and emergency management officials," the company said, quoted by AP on Wednesday, December 31.

CSX revealed that this incident did not cause any casualties.

"Our main focus remains on the health and safety of personnel on site, the surrounding community, and mitigating potential risks to the environment," the statement continued.

According to CSX, the chemical that leaked can be toxic if it is burned. However, after the fire was extinguished on Tuesday, December 30, air quality testing was carried out and the results were "all fine now".

When the fire occurred, Todd County authorities issued an order for residents to evacuate at least half a mile from the affected location as a precaution.
