Don't Show Off Too Much on Social Media During the Holidays, Here's Why

JAKARTA - Not uploading excessive vacation moments on social media is one of the important steps to maintain the safety of yourself and the house you left. The habit of sharing travel plans or vacation activities openly can be used by irresponsible parties.

In line with this, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Tangerang City, Banten, appealed to the public to be more wise in using social media, especially when they want to travel for a long time.

"This is a preventive measure to minimize the risk of crime and unwanted incidents during the holidays," said Head of the Tangerang City BPBD, Mahdiar, in Tangerang, as quoted by ANTARA.

In addition to limiting uploads on social media, the public is also asked to take a number of other preventive measures before leaving the house, one of which is by disconnecting or turning off the power supply to electronic devices.

"Turn off unused electrical equipment to ensure that the house is in a safe condition before traveling," said Mahdiar.

The Tangerang City BPBD recorded that throughout 2025 it had handled 276 fire incidents, one of the main causes of which was due to electrical short circuits.

The public is also reminded to ensure that all doors and windows are locked properly. In addition, it is recommended to entrust the house to neighbors or local neighborhood managers and inform the head of the RT/RW and neighborhood security officers of the travel plans.

"Installing automatic lights or sufficient lighting around the house can also be an additional step to prevent potential criminal acts," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Tangerang City Metro Police, Kombes Pol Raden Muhammad Jauhari, said that the police had deployed personnel to intensify security patrols on protocol roads and crowded locations ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays (Nataru), accompanied by dialogue activities with the community.

"For residents who will travel or return home and leave their homes empty, they are urged to coordinate with Bhabinkamtibmas or the local police," said Police Chief Raden Muhammad Jauhari.
