KTM RC 160 Ready to Beat Yamaha R15 V4 in India's Cheap Sport Bike Market
KTM is getting more aggressive in working on the entry-level sports bike market for the Indian market. After expanding its portfolio from 125 cc to 160 cc, the Austrian manufacturer is preparing to launch the KTM RC 160, which is projected to be a direct challenger to the Yamaha R15 V4.
This step follows the launch of the Duke 160 last August, which is aimed at disrupting the dominance of the MT-15. Now, it's the RC line's turn to be prepared to fill the gap in the light sport segment.
Ahead of its official debut, a number of images of the KTM RC 160 have circulated on the internet and provide a fairly clear picture of its design and specifications. As reported by Autocarindia, Wednesday, December 31.
From the visual that appears, RC 160 carries a silhouette almost identical to RC 200. The thick sport aura is visible from the LED headlights with sharp DRL, low windshield, polygonal mirrors, grooved tank, aerodynamic fairing, separate seats, to the under-body exhaust.
In the photo, the motorcycle appears in black with the typical KTM Electric Orange graphics that also decorate the rear subframe, emphasizing its aggressive character. As for the color, the RC 160 will likely adopt a similar option to the RC 200, namely Black, Blue, and Metallic Gray.
On the other hand, his rival from Yamaha offers no less sporty color choices, ranging from Matte Pearl White to Metallic Red. In the engine sector, the RC 160 is expected to carry a 164.2 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that is the same as the Duke 160.
The engine is claimed to produce 19 PS of power and 15.5 Nm of torque, combined with a 6-speed transmission. The four-valve DOHC configuration with carbon-coated cam followers is designed to maintain performance and engine durability, both for daily use and the track.
For comparison, the Yamaha R15 V4 relies on a 155 cc liquid-cooled engine with 18.4 PS of power and 14.2 Nm of torque. On paper, KTM is slightly superior in terms of output. To maximize peak performance, KTM is said to have the opportunity to reconfigure the final drive ratio on the RC 160.
In terms of frame and legs, the RC 160 will borrow many components from the Duke 160. This motorcycle is equipped with 17-inch wheels, USD WP ultra-light fork front suspension, WP Apex monoshock in the back, and 320 mm disc brakes in the front and 230 mm in the back with dual-channel ABS as standard.
The instrument panel still relies on an LCD screen that presents complete information, ranging from speed, gear position, RPM, fuel consumption, to remaining mileage. The KTM RC 160 is expected to launch in early 2026 with a price tag of around Rs 1.85 lakh or equivalent to Rp34 million, slightly more expensive than the Yamaha R15 V4 which is sold starting from Rs 1.69 lakh or Rp31 million.
