Gregoria Mariska Tunjung Withdraws from the 2026 Malaysia Open
JAKARTA - Women's singles badminton player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung withdrew from the 2026 Malaysia Open, which will take place next week.
Gregoria is one of two Indonesian women's singles who are on the list when BWF released the names of players for this tournament on November 28, 2025.
The athlete, who is familiarly called Jorji, was supposed to appear with his junior, Putri Kusuma Wardani. However, he then decided to withdraw from the elite tournament.
Until now, the reason for Gregoria's withdrawal is still unknown because the Central Management of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PP PBSI) has not released their official statement.
The draw for the tournament has been carried out by BWF. Putri as the only remaining women's singles representative will start her fight against Manami Suizu from Japan.
The daughter, who is the sixth seed in the tournament, previously won their only clash at the Macau Open in 2024 in two straight games.
The Malaysia Open, which is a BWF Super 1000 level, will take place on January 6-11, 2026 at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This tournament provides a total prize of 1.45 million US dollars.
Gregoria's withdrawal leaves Indonesia with only nine representatives to compete there. The other eight representatives consist of two men's singles, three men's doubles, one women's doubles, and two mixed doubles.
In the men's singles sector, Jonatan Christie will lead his junior colleague, Alwi Farhan, who just won a gold medal at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.
The men's doubles sector sent three pairs, namely Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, as well as the pair of Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin and Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Mohammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, who immediately faced each other in the first round.
The other three representatives are the women's doubles Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari and the mixed doubles Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu and Marwan Faza/Aisyah Salsabila Putri Pranata.
