Islam Makhachev Refuses to Fight in January 2026

JAKARTA - Islam Makhachev rejected the first opportunity to undergo a UFC welterweight title defense match in January 2026.

The new welterweight star could be on the list for UFC 324 on January 24, 2026 at the T-Mobile Arena, Nevada, USA, which presents the main fight between Paddy Pimblett against Justin Gaethje.

Makhachev estimates that he is likely to be offered an offer to fight Michael Morales who has never suffered a defeat. However, he insists on refusing because he doesn't have time.

"They said, 'You'll fight in January.' I said it was too late. They didn't tell me the name of the opponent, but honestly, I think it's Morales," he said as reported by Talksport.

Makhachev hinted that he would likely return to the octagon as early as mid-next year.

"I think definitely after Ramadan - April, May, June (2026). If they want to wait and postpone it until the White House, then I will wait. If not, I can fight for it sooner," he said.

Makhachev managed to become king in the welterweight class after he managed to defeat Jack Della Maddalena in UFC 322 in November 2024.

The victory was special because he made his debut in the class. The 34-year-old freestyle star was previously the lightweight champion, but decided to let go of the belt to move up to the welterweight class and immediately make history.

The biggest fight Makhachev might face in the welterweight division to defend the title is if Ilia Topuria chooses to move up from lightweight to challenge his middleweight rival.

However, El Matador is currently resting from the match and it is not clear what the next step is. Thus, Morales is the most likely challenger at this time, considering he is undefeated and clearly deserves the opportunity to compete for the UFC title.

Ian Garry also expressed his request to have the opportunity to win the title. This will also be an interesting fight considering his close relationship with UFC superstar, Conor McGregor.
