Minister of LH-Koster: Suwung Landfill Closed on March 1, 2026, Some Waste Transferred to Bangli Landfill

DENPASAR - Bali Governor Wayan Koster said the Suwung Final Processing Site (TPA), the largest landfill on the island of Bali located in the South Denpasar District, Denpasar City, will be closed completely on March 1, 2026.

Koster conveyed this after holding a closed meeting with Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, Regent of Badung I Wayan Adi Arnawa, Regent of Bangli, Sang Nyoman Sedana and Mayor of Denpasar, I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, at the Bali governor's office.

"It has been decided together with all of us, the closure of the Suwung landfill cannot be waited for anymore, it must be carried out on March 1, 2026," said Koster, Monday, December 29.

"We were given instructions by the Minister, with the Mayor of Denpasar and the Regent of Badung to prepare the steps that must be taken in these two months, so that the Suwung Landfill is closed. Then, there is a solution to overcome the closure," he added.

Governor Koster also mentioned that as a temporary solution related to the closure of the Suwung landfill, the Denpasar City Government and the Badung Regency Government managed the modern landfill, TPS3R TPST, and other waste management patterns.

Then, for the rest of the waste in the Denpasar City and Badung Regency areas, it will be transferred to the Landih landfill in Bangli Regency, Bali, to be temporarily stored until the waste processing to energy (PSEL) or waste to energy project located in the PT Pelindo area, Benoa, Denpasar City, is completed in two years.

"So that it can maximize the waste to be resolved upstream. Well, the rest is being prepared for the Bangli landfill to accommodate temporarily," he explained.

Meanwhile, Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said the government has long given sanctions to the Suwung landfill to become a landfill that is environmentally friendly or no longer open dumping.

"We have given sanctions. The government has long given sanctions to the Suwung landfill to be accelerated immediately into a landfill that is friendly to the environment. So today we will immediately transform from the Suwung landfill into a waste to energy landfill that will be arranged, being built," said Hanif.

"So the process is being auctioned. Hopefully, two years from now it can be completed. However, waiting for two years has been tightened with the Governor and all the ranks of the mayor and the regent to respond to the remaining time," he continued.

Minister Hanif also admitted that he had seen the waste management in Badung Regency and Denpasar City.

"So that's what the governor said he wanted to continue to push. The rest of the residue must be used as an alternative. The closure of the Suwung landfill does not mean that the government will neglect its duties, no. This garbage must be managed very carefully," he said.

"Once again, no developed country has a messy garbage. If we can manage our garbage well, by building a new culture, then this will be a very strong foundation for Bali as a tourism city. I apologize if I am wrong, but these are steps that must be taken by the government," he said.
